During an interaction with over 5 crore farmers from different pockets of the country through video conferencing on NaMo App, the PM heaped praise on the farmers for their hard work and assured that the BJP government is committed to their welfare. The PM noted that his government has doubled the budget for agriculture to Rs 2.12 lakh crore to achieve its objective of doubling farm income by 2022. The budget for 2018-19 fiscal has taken steps to provide farmers a price equivalent to 150 per cent of their cost of production, he said. Our government is working to ensure that the incomes of our farmers double by 2022. For that, we are facilitating needed assistance wherever required. We have faith in the farmers of India. The PM said that his government has already taken many decisions that have changed the situation for the better for farmers and made farming easy. He said that farmers had to stand in long queues to buy fertilisers, PM Modi further said that the Fasal Bima Yojana started by his government has minimised the risk that the farmers had to go through earlier. He also said that the country is not just witnessing record foodgrain production but milk, fruit and vegetable output too are at all-time highs. In 2017-18, 280 million tonnes of foodgrains were produced as compared to an average of 250 million tonnes between 2010 and 2014. Pulses production has increased 10.5 per cent. Our effort is to provide farmers assistance at all stage of agriculture – at the time of sowing, after sowing and at the time of harvesting, he said, adding the policy interventions are being planned to help farmers right from seeds to markets. The interaction with farmers was a part of the Prime Ministers direct outreach to the beneficiaries of a series of his pet schemes like Digital India campaign, Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana via NaMo app. Typically, during these interactions, PM Modi makes an opening statement about the topic or the scheme of the government, after which beneficiaries across the country narrate their experiences to him.
